The Horror of what transpired on January 17th 1920 has inspired radio shows, books, movies and generations of entrepreneurs. This was the day the United States implemented the Volstead Act, effectively making the entire mainland of the US a dry country.
Edward, Prince of Wales, returned to the United Kingdom following his tour of Canada in 1919, he recounted to his father, King George V, a “ditty” he had heard at a border town:
Four and twenty Yankees, feeling very dry,
Went across the border to get a drink of rye.
When the rye was opened, the Yanks began to sing,
“God bless America, but God save the King!
One of the things prohibition did was force the closure of puns, bars, and saloons. In it’s place pooped up something new… the Speakeasy, so called because of the practice of speaking quietly about such a place in public.
